Suwanee Dental Care Trains for Medical Emergencies

Over 200,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest every year according to Red Cross statistics. Nearly 50,000 of these deaths could have been prevented by initiating the Cardiac Chain of Survival, and an automated external defibrillator (AED). That is if one had been available for right then, at the location of the emergency.

The American Red Cross set a vision of one person in every household being trained in CPR lifesaving skills, every American being no more than four minutes away from an AED and someone trained to use that AED in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.

Suwanee Dental Care doctors and staff train on Basic CPR and the doctors train on Advanced Cardiac Life Support as a part of their ongoing continuing dental education. Their training this year is this monthThe most important tool for this work is the AED, Automated External Defibrillator. We have one at the dental office.

How do AED's, manual defibrillators, work? The heart is given a controlled electric shock, which forces the heart muscles to contract strongly. The goal is to make the heart restart back to its regular rhythm.

In the past, medical professionals were the only ones able to read and complex patterns that signified dysfundtional heart rhythms on manual defibrillators. But with the new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) this medical diagnostic tool can be used by any regular person with proper training. These units use embedded computer chips to analyze the data instantly and accurately as well as a human could. This way, the rapid treatment and correct treatment of heart attacks that happen in or near our practice can be quickly initiated. The new research from the American Heart Association states that time from onset of symptoms of heart attack and stroke to the time of treatment by medical professionals is a key component of survival. The key point is to get into treatment as soon as you recognize the symptoms....don't wait untill its too late for the EMT and doctors to help you. Follow the formula for life!
